GST Invoicing in India – What Your Billing Software Must Do
2025-02-01 · Acco Desk
If you run a business in India, your billing software must support GST compliance. Here’s what to look for.
GST-compliant invoice format
Invoices must include:
- GSTIN of supplier and recipient
- HSN/SAC codes
- Tax rates (CGST, SGST, IGST) and amounts
- Place of supply
- Invoice number and date in the required format
Good software generates invoices that meet these requirements by default.
E-invoicing and e-way bills
For applicable turnover, e-invoicing (IRP) and e-way bill integration are mandatory. Your software should support generating and tracking these without manual steps.
Returns and reporting
GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and annual returns require consistent data. Your system should:
- Store all transaction data needed for returns
- Export or integrate with return-filing tools
- Provide clear reports for reconciliation
Inventory and credit notes
Inventory tracking and credit note handling should align with GST rules (reversal, adjustment). This keeps books and returns in sync.
